As some of you know, The United Methodist Church released news today about a plan to split over conflicting views related to human sexuality. The potential split comes amid heightened tensions in the church since the Special Session of General Conference last February. According to a news release from umnews.org, “a diverse, 16-member group of United Methodist bishops and other leaders has offered a proposal that would preserve The United Methodist Church while allowing traditionalist-minded congregations to form a new denomination.” “Traditionalist Methodists” are those who oppose gay marriage and the ordination of LGBTQ clergy. The plan will need to be approved at the General Conference session in May.
While there are many other details to this plan, and it is always sad to have a split, I am hopeful this is a good arrangement to move forward.
As I have stated in the past, Lovely Lane will remain Lovely Lane. We will continue to warmly embrace all people. I remain blessed to serve as the pastor of this wonderful congregation!
Let us keep our denomination in our thoughts and prayers! I will keep you updated as I learn more.
Grace and Peace!
